Research is showing that sex workers are operating across the North East and work is under way to help free them from their cycle of abuse. Girls aged between 16 and 18 who are in danger of slipping through the social services net and into the sex industry.
Women were selling sex for a roof over their head, for laundry, tiny amounts of money, a packet of cigarettes, a bottle of cider, she said. Sex workers can be found in a range of locations across the region, from railway stations to takeaways, according to the experts.
The research stems back a number of years. Soon there was a regular group of 10 coming along on a Friday afternoon. These women did not fit in with any regular stereotypes of sex workers. They were known to many professionals — social workers, homeless agencies, police, drugs and alcohol workers — but did not disclose their lives in relation to sex work to anyone.
It appeared the hidden nature of sex work exacerbated the stigma and shame associated with this element of their lives. By Craig Thompson.
