If you're a single westerner, you WILL be harassed to no end It really is ruining the city's image Maybe you should avoid going to Nanjing Rd. I know many western men who visit or live in Shanghai and yes sometimes it can be a problem in certain areas of the city.
But they quickly learned not to go to those areas and they have no problems. It's the same in Los Angeles. If you go to where the prostitutes are, you will be propositioned. If you read this forum you know that Nanjing road is an annoying place. If this never happened to you before then you need to travel more. This is an apparent problem for westerners all over the city, and in my 24 years in LA, or anywhere else, they wait for you to approach, not the other way around when you're chased by them Absolutely agree.
Apparently OP never travelled to Bangkok , Tokyo , Been to both Tokyo and Bangkok ; and NO, not been approached Just to ignore them. They will go away after a little while. This applies to all over China when you are approached. We got harassed into buying fake stuff but after a day when they saw we weren't interested they didn't bother us again. No sympathy whatsoever for people who sign on to this forum after their visit to complain when they had no foresight to read the "Top Questions about Shanghai " before their visit.

Plus there are numerous posts noting that East Nanjing Road has been named by cnngo as one of the world's Top 10 Tourist Traps.
